In a peaceful valley setting along Ohios Mohican
River, Wally World Resort offers a rustic beauty and charm to all
its visitors. About midway between Columbus and Cleveland, the resort
is in Ohios vacation center, with the Great Lakesonly a two-hour
drive to the north. The Mohican State Park and Dam provide a large
lake for seasonal water activities, and the extensive Mohican Memorial
State Forest provides year-round hiking and many other activities.
The closest area attraction is Malabar Farm State Park where displays
review the states agricultural heritage. Its sustainable agricultural
library maintains volumes of historical information, and the 32-room
country home of author Louis Bromfield, located here, is open for
tours. Bromfield was a man of many passions and interests, and his
lovely farm, which he reclaimed from ecological collapse, was one
his most abiding interests. The house is in mint condition, the
fields are prosperous, and its a marvelous place for collections
of paintings and sculptures including works by Winslow Homer, Mary
Cassatt, George Bellows, and Frederick Remington.
To the east of the resort, in Holmes, Wayne, and Tuscarawas Counties
is the largest population of Amish in the world. The best way to
enjoy Amish country is to simply explore it, traveling the back
roads and lanes at the same pace that the Amish do, which is gently,
indeed.
The Ohio Central Railroad in Sugarcreek is a splendid way to begin
a visit to Amish country, with a one-hour train ride behind a steam
locomotive.
No trip to Amish country would be complete without visiting Lehmans
Hardware store in Kidron. It caters to the particular needs of the
Amish and stocks such items as sad irons, propane refrigerators,
and huge copper and cast-iron kettles. In nearly every community
youll find the Amish making clocks, chairs, desks, carriages,
harnesses, and more. |
