Resort Profile

Wilderness Resort brings nature and campers together with the perfect blend of wilderness and leisure-time activities. Whether you’re ready for wildlife viewing, a bike ride through the woods, or a group get-together, you’ll find the perfect opportunity in this expansive wooded parkland setting.

The resort is a perfect spot to start adventures in the natural beauty that dominates the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The 22-mile River Road Scenic Byway along the southern bank of the Au Sable River in the Huron National Forest showcases tree-banked reservoirs, spawning salmon, and bald eagles in their natural habitats. This area is also home to the Lumberman’s Monument, which chronicles the logging legacy of the river. The Shore-to-Shore Hiking-Riding Trail, for the most part surrounded by the sheltering woods and protected habitats of the Huron National Forest, all but defies traversal of the complete trail as it stretches across the entire state of Michigan from the shore of Lake Huron to the shore of Lake Michigan. However, this magnificent trail does invite hikers and bicyclists to take short and long treks anywhere along its path.

For those who prefer a quiet day on the Au Sable River to a walk in the woods, an outing with Paddlewheel River Boat Trips provides 2 hours and 19 miles of historic narratives and scenic river views while cruising on the Au Sable River Queen. Other water-based activities in this area include fishing for perch, salmon, trout, and walleye at Tawas Bay northeast of the resort. And the abundance of lakes and rivers throughout the area offers a variety of other fishing opportunities. This area of Michigan is known as a sportsman’s paradise.

Wilderness Resort encourages local residents and visitors alike to come and enjoy the array of natural settings and the many activities offered by and near the resort. It's a great place to relax — exploring, engaging, and enjoying the great outdoors.
