Resort Profile

Shilo’s Lake Bruin Resort introduces its guests to the bass fisherman’s paradise! Lake Bruin, a 3,000-acre oxbow lake, is the ideal place for fishing, boating, and water skiing.

Be sure to travel just across the state line to Port Gibson, Mississippi to the Ruins of Windsor. Built in 1861, it was the largest antebellum mansion in Mississippi. Even though it survived the Civil War, it was destroyed by fire in 1890. The ghostly remains of the mansion are open to visitors year-round. Just to the south of Newellton is the historic Mississippi River levee town of St. Joseph. Here visitors will see the late Gothic-style Christ Episcopal Church, the impressive English Baroque-domed Tensas Parish Courthouse, the Tensas Parish Museum, Italianate structures, several 19th-century houses, and the commercial corridor with Greek Revival.

History buffs will enjoy a visit to Vicksburg, Mississippi, a 40-mile drive to the north of the resort. The 1,700-acre Vicksburg National Military Park contains more than 1,260 memorials, bronze portraits, markers, monuments, statues, and tablets honoring the soldiers who participated in the Vicksburg campaign during the Civil War. Also seen in the park are artillery positions, forts, and trenches that have been re-created on authentic sites. In town, the Old Court House Museum, built by slaves in 1858, stands where a local planter, Jefferson Davis, launched his political career. Thousands of artifacts and Southern antebellum items are displayed in the museum.

The principal research and testing laboratory of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station, is also in Vicksburg. Scale models, some equipped with wave- and tide-making machines, are used for the study of river, harbor and flood control projects.

Nightlife abounds on the riverboat casinos that dock on the Mississippi River at Vicksburg.
