Visitors to this southeastern Arizona resort enjoy
the arid weather at an elevation of 3,500 feet. With the resorts
twin lakes and five artesian springs, relaxation comes almost automatically.
Here in southwestern Arizona is where cowboy lore originated. This
is where the Earps and the Clantons shot it out at the OK Corral,
and where Geronimo and Cochise stood up to the U.S. Calvary. This
area lives up to Arizonas Old West legends, and a lot of the
Old West can still be seen here. There are ghost towns to be explored
and mines to tour. The Wests wildest gunfights are reenacted
for the benefit of travelers and many of the old saloons are restored
to respectable versions of their celebrated notoriety.
Just a few miles from the resort is Tombstone, the famous frontier
town that was made a Registered Historical Landmark in 1962. Here
Boothill Cemetery, Bird Cage Theatre, the Courthouse, and the Crystal
Palace Saloon are all preserved for the enjoyment of both young
and old. Infamous for its saloons, gambling houses, brawls, and
gunfights, its often overlooked that this historic mining
town was once the most cultivated city in the West, and in its time
was a larger and more sophisticated town than San Francisco. An
interesting historic site, the Cochise Stronghold just south of
I-10 near Benson, is a natural fortress in the east face of the
Dragoon Mountains. These towering lookouts are where Cochise sought
refuge from the U.S. Calvary after a raid during the years of the
Indian wars.
Known for its spectacular high desert valleys, conifer-clad mountains,
beautiful canyons, and stark low desert landscapes, the area west
of St. David RV Resort is home to the saguaros (cactus) in Saguaro
National Monument. For golfing enthusiasts, the area abounds with
golf courses and country clubs. |
